Charlie Kirk, the American conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on 10 September 2025 at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah. He was 31.
Kirk was hosting a “Prove Me Wrong” debate in the courtyard of UVU’s Sorensen Center, where he was engaging students on issues including mass shootings and transgender policy.
At approximately 12:23 pm, a single shot was fired from the rooftop of the nearby Losee Center. Kirk was struck in the neck and later died at Timpanogos Regional Hospital.
Investigators recovered a Mauser Model 98 bolt-action rifle chambered in .30-06 with a mounted scope, along with spent cartridges found in a wooded area north of campus. Authorities said the casings bore engravings referencing internet memes and anti-fascist slogans.
The suspect
The suspect was identified as Tyler James Robinson, a 22-year-old from Washington, Utah, who surrendered to police the following day.
According to investigators, Robinson expressed ideological motivations. In a message to his partner, he wrote: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” Authorities said he appeared to have been radicalised through online communities.
Robinson was charged with aggravated murder and multiple additional counts. Prosecutors have indicated they will seek the death penalty.
National impact
Kirk’s killing quickly reverberated across US politics, media, and public discourse.
In October 2025, President Donald Trump posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, elevating his profile among conservative audiences.
The aftermath also saw a wave of disciplinary actions across the country, informally referred to as the “Charlie Kirk purge,” with hundreds of individuals reportedly fired or suspended over social media posts perceived as celebrating or trivialising his death. The actions triggered legal challenges, including a lawsuit by the Texas AFT union against the Texas Education Agency over alleged retaliatory investigations into educators.
The incident also intersected with broader media tensions. ABC temporarily suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the host suggested pro-Trump figures were politicising the killing, a move that followed public pressure from regulators.
Separately, commentator Candace Owens published a series of podcasts disputing the official “lone actor” account. Her claims were rejected by authorities, while Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, publicly urged her to stop promoting unsubstantiated theories.
